The former Liverpool defender does not consider the Portuguese to be one of the top five coaches in world football despite his previous successJose Mourinho sits below Jurgen Klopp, Pep Guardiola and Antonio Conte on the list of the world’s best coaches, says Steve Nicol.
The Manchester United manager has enjoyed considerable success throughout a glittering career, with three trophies added to his collection during a debut campaign at Old Trafford.
He is, however, considered to have lost some of his magic by former Liverpool defender Nicol, with a number of Premier League rivals now above him.
Real Madrid’s double winner Zinedine Zidane and Bayern Munich boss Carlo Ancelotti are also held in higher regard by a man who has questioned United’s sixth-place finish in 2016-17 after spending big bolstering their ranks.
Asked by ESPN FC to name his top five of world managers, Nicol said: "The reason Klopp is ahead of Mourinho, is because Jose Mourinho went out and spent over £200million last season and took his side to sixth in the Premier League.
"Jurgen Klopp, with I would suggest less talent, turned Liverpool into a top four side.
"So you tell me why Jose Mourinho would be in this list.
"He went to Chelsea, won the league and all of a sudden he's on the up again.
"The following year, complete and utter dismay and then he turned Manchester United into a side that finished sixth.
"Man United under Fergie were about winning Champions League titles and winning Premier League titles."
Mourinho is expected to splash the cash again this summer in an effort to fire United back into title contention.
He has delivered on his remit of bringing Champions League football back to the club, but the challenge now is to restore domestic dominance.
